![]() I recognized it was going to be one such story, but at the same time, it told its own story. (Mamoru Hosoda's) BELLE: I'm a sucker for "Beauty and the Beast" stories, and it shows. It marches to the beat of its own drum: a wisher with humble goals, a greedy genie archetype, the feisty heroine who doesn't pull a "plot-mandated-friendship-failure", and a villain you don't see coming. WISH DRAGON: This is an Aladdin story that's technically not an Aladdin story. And I loved the angle where he gets to have a secret identity, almost like a REAL hero! Megamind himself also has charm and a sense of humor to his character that won me over when I watched the movie. MEGAMIND: Now THIS is how you do subversion expectations! The villain is really our hero, the damsel isn't always in distress, the minion isn't a forgettable faceless mook, and the real bad guy isn't obvious. He's unsure and new to the world, but he still finds the courage to do what must be done. The characters each has a personality, and Elijah Wood really slayed it as the titular stitchpunk 9. It has a special place in my heart as a post-apocalypse story. ![]() The ending may be bittersweet, but it's still hopeful in spite of that. (Shane Acker's) 9: This was an interesting story to watch. And the best part, this movie kicked off all of Laika's masterpieces! She starts out as a brat who doesn't appreciate what she has, but comes to realize she has it good once she learns the Other World isn't the paradise she thought it was. And Coraline Jones is character development done right. The movie did subverting expectations right: it took the Other Mother, made her look like the perfect surrogate mother, then revealed she was a monster all along. I was initially intimidated by its horror elements, but paradoxically, I fell in love with its animation style and looked forward to it. So here's my personal (and chronological) dedication to these animated movies, in honor of 2023!ĬORALINE: The mother of all Laika movies, this was the pioneer of the studios' stop-motion animated movies, and it shows. And that's true, but the point is, they're long overdue for the recognition that I ever watched them. Some of these are movies that came LONG before 2022.
